Matthew A. Gilbert, MBA

Bio

Embracing the motto “learn continuously, live generatively,” I am a writer, marketer and teacher balancing intellectual artistry with pragmatic intensity.

As a writer, for more than 20 years I have authored academic papers and articles in blogs, magazines, and newspapers. With deep journalism roots, my byline can be found in local, regional and national publications. Intellectually minded, I published eleven academic papers and presented nine of them at academic conferences across the United States. I also maintain a blog, doctorio.us, with which I chronicle my adventures in academia as a teacher and student, while featuring stories related to the courses I teach.

As a marketer, for more than 14 years I have managed brands, products, and public relations campaigns in the healthcare, non-profit, and technology segments. My areas of expertise include advertising, blogging, branding, copywriting, e-mail solicitations, collateral, direct mail, marketing, public relations, social media, and website design. I have worked with individuals, corporations and organizations in both the private and public sectors, generating $100,000 in weekly sales for one organization and raising $500,000 to fund cancer research for a prominent medical research and treatment facility.

As a teacher, for more than 4 years I have instructed adults and adolescents about business, communication, English, technology and traffic safety. Embracing a “generative learning” approach to instruction, I avoid assignments that require repetition of information in deference to papers, presentations and projects. Through my consulting agency, Generative Learning Group, I have developed management training programs, launched summer internship initiatives, designed computer-based training modules and refined online recruitment procedures for entrepreneurial entities, corporations and educational institutions.

Educationally, I earned an MBA from Woodbury University, receiving the “Outstanding MBA Scholarship” award in the process. I also have a BA in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing from UC Santa Barbara, where I graduated with high honors and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

I also completed coursework in a doctoral program at Pepperdine University and am investigating new opportunities through which I can investigate my research interests: actor-network theory, artificial intelligence, citizen journalism, collective (symbiotic) intelligence, crowdsourcing, distributed computing, human-computer interaction, media convergence, organizational communication, social media, and Transactive memory.

Raised near San Francisco, I was born in Boston and am a Bruins, Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox fan. I enjoy graphic novels and admire superheroes from the DC Comics universe. I have also had a lifelong fascination with aviation and space travel. However, when I am earthbound, you can find me living in the Los Angeles area.
